school spirit at its best!!

school spirit at its best!!

As promised last week I said I would track down a picture of the “Bookworm” from PME who helped cap off a great week of Literary events.  I can only say that there is no end to what our “fearless leaders” will do in the name of building school culture.

More in the name of building school culture is the annual “band sleepover” that took place at Westview Secondary.  Money gets raised, kids get a chance to build team, and at the end of the day all concerned go without any sleep.

Another outstanding event which always allows a great opportunity for the community to come together and witness what great kids we have in our schools is the Maple Ridge Secondary School Grad Transitions presentatioins. This is where all grade 12 students meet with a panel of interviewers and describe in detail where they have come from and where they wish to go next with their educational journey.  I have never been more impressed than what I was this year as I had engineers, teachers, chefs, and aspiring politicians come before me.  The use of technology and the confidence in the presentation style was inspiring.  This event is something that I wish all of our public could be part of as it would sure be a great authentic measure of all we do over the years in our education system.  This same event takes place at several other high schools so hopefully we will get more and more people volunteering to be part of it.  A great day!!!

Moving completely to the other end of our education system, that being Kindergarten, we had lots of parents out to the first meeting about full day kindergarten on Monday night.  Many people came with lots of questions that our Kindergarten committee answered with passion.  There is no doubt that people went away from the meeting feeling very comfortable about what awaits their child in our first phase of full day kindergarten.
For me the week was really gratifying as I was able to spend time chatting with the kids getting ready to leave our system as well as parents of students just getting ready to enter our system.  We have so much to be proud of in this district.
