November 2015 PAC minutes

PAC stands for Parent Advisory Council.  The purpose of the PAC is to offer parents an opportunity for communication between the school and home, to promote and support education, and to contribute to the sense of community within the school and between the school, home, and the neighborhood.  The PAC is very involved in our school community and organizes activities for students and parents including Book Fairs, Hot Lunch, Carnival, and more.  We aim to improve the learning experience of our students by including and supporting parents.  Parents are partners in education and have a voice at the school and district levels and are encouraged to share constructive input and recommendations at meetings.  ALL parents and guardians of students registered at MRE are voting members of the PAC and are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings which are held in the school library generally on the second Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 pm, and last about an hour.

Every child deserves our continued commitment!

The MRE PAC participates in many fundraisers throughout the year and we don’t expect every family to participate in each one, but hope that each family will find something of interest to them.  Thanks for helping make MRE the Place to Be!

Message from the Chair

Welcome to the students, families and staff of MRE! It is certainly nice to get back into a routine after our lovely summer.

First off, I’d like to thank the parents for entrusting me to be your Chair this year.  I have been lucky enough to volunteer with the PAC for the last 5 years (including 3 as the Vice-Chair).  Although the shoes from our previous Chair, Heather, are large I will do my best to fill them.

Aside from being a presence at the school, one of the main jobs of the Parents Advisory council is to bring in new and exciting equipment and programs to the school. This of course cannot be done without the many fundraisers the PAC does throughout the year.

Please let me know if you would like to be added to our Parent email list.  Joining our list will ensure you are kept up-to-date on the various things happening in our school  You can also join the MRE Parents page of Facebook!

Please feel free to contact me at at: sabrinaharker@hotmail.com

Sincerely,

Sabrina Harker (PAC Chair)

PAC Meetings:

Join us for coffee and conversation!  Meetings are open to every parent and guardian of students at MRE.  If you want to know what is planned for the year or have an idea or recommendation please join us in the library on the Second Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm.  Meetings usually last about an hour.  Meeting dates are published in the school newsletter and meeting minutes are posted on the PAC board, which is across the hall from the main office.  Research proves that students do better in school when their parents are involved!  Should you require babysitting to attend the PAC Meeting, please contact Sabrina Harker.

Volunteer Opportunities:

“Many hands make light work!”

Every PAC is made up of volunteers and each year we look for many volunteers to help us with different committees.  Please look over the committees and see if there is anything you can help us with.  Please don’t feel obligated to join a committee, just help out for an hour.  If every parent volunteered just ONE HOUR per school year we could accomplish so much more for our children!  The MRE PAC rewards our valuable volunteers with PAC BUCKS which you can use like cash towards hot lunches, book fair, spirit wear, and more!  Your children will also love seeing you around the school helping out!  Just remember to sign in at the office!  Want to help and not sure how?  Leave a message with the office and we will gladly give you the information you need.

Mabel’s Labels ~ Go to www.mapleridge.mabelslabels.com and order your labels and tags.  This new fundraiser will be ongoing throughout the school year.

Fall Bulbs ~ Order your bulbs in September for beautiful spring flowers.  All money raised from this fundraiser goes towards a Primary Playground Fundraising Account.

Spirit Wear ~ What’s your House Team? Are you an Eagle(yellow)? A Hawk (red)+? A Falcon (green)? An Osprey (blue)? Show your team spirit with a T-shirt in your House Team colour and help your team earn points!  Help is needed with ordering and distributing the shirts.

Crossing Guard ~ This is a job that takes 20 minutes.  Guards are needed for drop off time in the morning, and pick up time in the afternoon every school day.  We supply the safety vest and stop signs.  You supply the willingness to direct and stop traffic on River Road so our little ones may safely cross this busy road to and from school.  An easy, but very important volunteer role.

Neufeld Farms ~ Place your order for these quality frozen entrees, appetizers, and cookies and receive them before the holidays.  Help is needed organizing the orders.

Shopping Extravaganza ~ Join us for this 2nd annual fun evening of shopping in the school gym with 40 local vendors on November 15th.  You will find great items like crafts, food, jewelry, household items and more! Help is needed with set up and take down.

Family Photo Night ~ Once a year we offer families a chance to have a family photo taken and receive a FREE 8×10 photo.  Grandparents, other family members and pets welcome!  Let your friends know about this great offer. Sitting Fee goes directly to MRE.  We need help booking appointment times for this event.

Save-On-Foods Tapes ~ Please bring in your receipts from Save-On-Foods.  For every $10,000 in receipts the school will receive a $10.00 gift card.  Receipts can be dropped off in the envelope on the PAC board.

Movie Night ~ Come to school at night in your PJ’s and watch a movie in the school gym!  Admission is by donation.  Help is needed with the concessions.

Campbell’s Soup Labels ~ Please drop off all your Campbell’s soup labels in the container on the PAC board and help us earn free sports equipment!

Hot Lunches ~ Usually once a month we offer students the opportunity to purchase hot lunch.  Sometimes it’s pizza, sometimes it’s hot dogs, and help is needed prior to and during the lunch hour to organize the lunches.

Lug-A-Mug ~ A few times a year, in the colder months, we offer FREE soup or hot chocolate to all students.  Students just need to ‘Lug-A-Mug’ to school to enjoy this tasty treat!  Help is needed preparing and distributing the product.

Book Fair ~ Every year the book fair organizers require a few people to cover shifts of an hour or two to help set up, tear down, and run the book fair.  The book fair runs twice a year for about four days and includes one evening.  Flyers are sent home and information can be found in the school newsletter prior to the fair.  The kids love the book fair and it makes a good amount of money for PAC projects.

Fruit & Vegetable Program ~ MRE is pleased to offer the FREE Provincial Fruit & Veggies Program again this year!  Fruit or veggies are provided to the classrooms every other week.  Each child in the school receives an item to try in class, but this program DOES NOT replace regular snack time or lunches.  If your child has an allergy to fruits or vegetables please fill out a ‘reverse’ consent form (available in the office) and send it back to school ONLY if your child has food allergies.  Help is needed distributing the food item.

Garage Sale ~ New this year!  Save your garage sale items for this giant outdoor community event in April.  Help will be needed with concessions, set up and tear down.

Health & Safety ~ Each year we need help taking inventory of our emergency preparedness and safety supplies.  As a central hub of our community, the reality is that in an emergency situation or natural disaster, MRE could be called upon to handle much more than the student population, and must address the issue of emergency preparedness.

Carnival Fun Day ~ The students look forward to this June event!  The MRE PAC uses funds raised throughout the year to provide a FREE Carnival to the students.  Help is needed the day of the Carnival to set up, take down, and supervise the stations and concessions.

MRE Garden ~ Do you like to garden?  Do you have some extra time?  The school garden can use your help.  Contact the office and leave a message for Eleah or Ruth.

Fundraising – General ~ We have many tried and true fundraisers to offer and usually try a few new ones each year.  The help required for these is varied, but some of the jobs are: helping set up or take down tables or displays, helping to distribute food orders, helping separate products into orders, and manning concessions.  If you have a special interest in any of the fundraisers please sign up on the volunteer sheet on the PAC board (across from the main office) and specify the job and we will contact you when the need arises.
